Piano Maintenance and Regulation

There has been some misunderstanding about the maintenance of pianos: a piano is a piece of furniture and is expected to function flawlessly for decades without any service other than tuning. The reality is that pianos don't tolerate climate changes well, and require periodic service no matter if they are being played or not.

Piano services

Like any fine mechanism, the piano action, keyboard, dampers, and pedals need to be regulated periodically. The action should be regulated every few years, preferably together with the keyboard. The maintenance includes cleaning, polishing and regulation. The regulation includes lubricating the parts, leveling the keys, regulating the action, adjusting the pedals, and adjusting the shifting of the key frame. With correct maintanence and regulation, the tone and touch of the piano will be greatly improved and the life of the piano will be extended. Unfortunately, we are unable to serve digital pianos.

Half day services and full day services are provided. Alternetively you can pay by hour. A full consultation will be given on the day before any work is carried out.

Voicing

Pianos' mellow tone needs periodic voicing to be maintained, as well as turning and regulation. Over strident and shrill or glassy feelings on sound, also described as overly bright tone, is a result of many hours of playing: hammers repeatedly collide with strings, making the felt forming into hard areas. When those hard areas knock on strings, unpleasant sounds occur. The more mellow, warmer and richer tone can be restored by a skilled technician working on the hammers. Not only do most pianists prefer, these feelings of tone should be enjoyed by everyone playing the piano.
