PTA Annual Convention 2023

Pianoforte Tuners’ Association Annual Convention 2023 took place at The Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate, on 10th May and 11th May. It was considered to be one of the most important events for PTA and over 80 delegates attended this convention.

Yamaha Hybrid Piano Maintenance

Various classes were held on both days. ‘Yamaha Hybrid Piano Maintenance’ brought the essential knowledges for technicians. With a comprehensive understanding about Yamaha’s hybrid piano system, technicians can perform better service. ‘Cyber Tuner-Tuning Your Way’ was an opportunity to let the developer Dean Reyburn face users directly, questions were answered, feedbacks were collected and together they could improve the app in the future. ‘Looking after your hearing’ emphasised the importance of the fundamental ‘tool’ all piano technicians depending on: their hearings. ‘Keyboard evaluation, geometry and replacement for the rebuilder’ suggested how to rebuild a piano by checking the keyboard condition. Apart from technical side, ‘Grow with Gazelle’ introduced Gazelle, a software that can manage tuners’ schedule more effectively, as most piano technicians are self-employed, a better time management do make a difference. 5 classes concluded the first day.

Build a piano tone

Piano tone’ started the second day. Paul Williams shared his tone building through non-invasive repair and regulation techniques, as well as the techniques to increase attack, sustain, projection and tonal balance in the treble frequencies 1000 – 2000Hz. Last but not least, David Martin condensed his over 40 years’ experience into ‘Upright Regulation and Grand Regulation’ class, just like a flow of piano regulation history.

An interesting auction floated laughter over the convention. Some fortunate or exact delegates expanded their toolboxes by winning the Sealed bid auction. Lucky Draw contributed more items, including souvenirs like a mug with Bach’s notes.

Delegates gathered together to communicate, to learn and to carry the industry going forward, at the same time, to send appreciations and good wishes to PTA.
